GPS Tracker Repair & Maintenance — Because a Dead Tracker Is a Promise Your Vehicle No Longer Keeps

The most dangerous tracker in Kenya is the one everybody believes is working. It went offline eight months ago — after a garage rewired the dashboard, after the backup battery swelled, after the provider who installed it stopped answering calls — and the owner still sleeps well, protected by a device that stopped reporting long before the thief checked. Kendaall diagnoses, repairs, rewires, upgrades, and services GPS trackers of every brand, including units installed by other companies, at our Nairobi workshop or at your location.

What Tracker Maintenance Is

A Tracker Is a Safety Device. It Deserves the Same Discipline as Your Brakes.

Tracker repair and maintenance is the service layer that keeps a vehicle’s monitoring hardware doing the one job it was bought for: reporting the truth, continuously, especially on the worst day. A GPS tracker is a small electronic device living in a hostile habitat — engine-bay heat, dashboard vibration, humidity, voltage spikes from jump-starts, mechanics who unplug “that extra wire,” and lithium backup batteries with a two-to-three-year natural lifespan. Left unserviced, every tracker in the country trends toward the same destination: silently offline.

The consequences scale with what the tracker was protecting. For a private car owner, a dead tracker means the stolen vehicle recovery capability they think they have does not exist, and an insurer’s tracking-device discount may quietly become a voided claim condition. For a fleet, degraded devices corrupt the data everything else runs on: a mis-reading fuel sensor turns fuel monitoring into fiction; a tracker with a failing GPS antenna scatters phantom kilometres across fleet management reports; a school bus unit that drops offline mid-route defeats the entire purpose of school bus tracking. In monitoring, hardware health is data integrity.

“Nobody buys a tracker to have a tracker. They buy the phone call at 3 a.m. that says where the car is. Maintenance is what keeps that phone call possible.”

Kendaall’s repair service is deliberately brand-agnostic. Kenya’s tracking market has left thousands of vehicles carrying orphaned devices — installed by providers that closed, rebranded, or simply stopped supporting old hardware — and owners are routinely told their only option is to rip everything out and start again. Usually it isn’t. Our technicians diagnose and repair third-party units, migrate salvageable hardware onto Kendaall’s monitoring platform, and replace only what is genuinely dead, with new devices drawn from our own shop stock and covered by the standard hardware warranty. The same team runs our professional installation service and tracker transfer and removal service, so the repair, the re-fit, and the paperwork happen in one visit — at the workshop on Kasarani Mwiki Road, or on-site anywhere from Westlands and Karen to Nakuru and Eldoret.

When to Bring It In

Eight Symptoms of a Tracker That Is Failing — or Already Gone

Trackers rarely die loudly. They degrade through these recognisable stages. If any of the following describes your device — whoever installed it — it needs a diagnosis before it needs to work.

“Last seen” days or weeks ago. The app shows a stale position. The vehicle has moved; the dot has not. This is a fully offline device — the highest-priority fault.

Position jumps and phantom trips. The vehicle “teleports” across town or logs journeys at 3 a.m. that never happened — classic failing GPS antenna or degraded signal wiring.

Offline after garage work. The tracker died the same week the mechanic touched the dashboard, radio, or alarm. A disturbed power line or ground — the most common repair we perform.

No alerts anymore. Ignition, geofence, or overspeed alerts simply stopped. Often a platform or SIM issue rather than hardware — a fifteen-minute fix if caught early.

Dies when the engine is off. Tracking works while driving but the device vanishes overnight — a swollen or dead internal backup battery, which also means zero theft protection when power is cut.

Fuel readings that make no sense. The fuel graph shows a full tank on an empty vehicle or sawtooth noise — the sensor needs recalibration or its connection has corroded.

The old provider is unreachable. The device may be fine, but the platform behind it is abandoned. This is a takeover case: we migrate the hardware to Kendaall’s platform.

It’s a 2G-era device. Legacy 2G/3G trackers face shrinking network support. An ageing unit that drops connection in areas with good phone coverage is telling you its network is going away — upgrade before it strands you.

What We Repair & Service

Six Repair & Maintenance Services, One Workshop Standard

SERVICE 01 · Offline Device Diagnosis & Repair

The core service. A structured diagnostic sequence — power circuit, fuse and relay, ground integrity, GSM and GPS antennas, SIM status, firmware state, and platform registration — isolates why a device went silent, in that order, because 70% of “dead trackers” are wiring and power faults, not dead electronics. You receive a plain-language diagnosis and a fixed repair quote before any work proceeds; devices that are genuinely beyond repair are replaced from the car tracker or fleet tracker range at the installation-included prices on the pricing page.

  • Full-sequence bench and in-vehicle diagnostics, all brands
  • Fixed quote after diagnosis — no work without your approval
  • Repair-first policy: replacement only when repair is uneconomical
  • Post-repair live verification: device reporting before the vehicle leaves

SERVICE 02 · Rewiring & Reinstallation After Garage Work

Dashboards come apart for radios, alarms, air-conditioning, and accident repairs — and trackers are what mechanics disconnect first and remember last. We restore correct power, ignition-sense, and ground connections, re-route wiring away from heat and moving parts, and re-conceal the device to installation standard, often to a better hiding position than it started with. For vehicles being sold, the same visit can instead become a clean removal and transfer to your next car.

  • Post-garage power and ignition-line restoration
  • Professional re-concealment and harness protection
  • Coordination with your garage during accident repairs and resprays

SERVICE 03 · Backup Battery & Component Replacement

The internal backup battery is the tracker’s last line of defence — it is what keeps the device reporting after a thief cuts vehicle power — and it is also the component with the shortest natural life. We replace backup batteries, SIM holders, antenna leads, relays, and connectors with graded parts from our accessories stock, restoring anti-tamper capability that most owners never knew had lapsed.

  • Backup battery testing and replacement (recommended every 2–3 years)
  • Immobilisation relay testing and replacement
  • Antenna, harness, fuse, and connector renewal

SERVICE 04 · Network & Platform Upgrades (2G/3G → 4G)

Older trackers speak to networks that are being switched off. As Kenyan operators refarm 2G and 3G spectrum toward 4G and 5G, legacy devices will keep losing coverage until they lose it everywhere. We upgrade ageing units to current 4G LTE hardware — reusing existing wiring where sound to cut installation time and cost — and migrate your history onto Kendaall’s platform so the vehicle’s record continues unbroken. Fleet-wide upgrade programmes are scheduled in batches so no more than a agreed fraction of the fleet is ever off monitoring at once.

  • 4G LTE device upgrades with existing-harness reuse where possible
  • SIM, airtime, and APN configuration and troubleshooting
  • Batch-scheduled fleet upgrades with zero-gap monitoring plans

SERVICE 05 · Sensor Recalibration: Fuel, Temperature & Peripherals

Sensors drift; tanks get replaced; wiring corrodes. We recalibrate fuel level sensors against measured fills, service temperature probes on refrigerated units, re-pair dashcams, and verify every peripheral against ground truth — because a sensor that lies is worse than no sensor at all. This service is standard preparation for fleets whose fuel or driver behaviour data will be used in disputes, audits, or disciplinary processes.

  • Fuel sensor recalibration with documented measured-fill procedure
  • Temperature, door, and PTO sensor service for specialised fleets
  • Dashcam re-pairing, lens service, and storage checks

SERVICE 06 · Fleet Device Health Audits & Maintenance Contracts

For fleets, we run scheduled health audits: every device tested in place, backup batteries load-checked, wiring inspected, firmware updated, sensors verified, and a fleet health report issued with a traffic-light status per vehicle. Maintenance contracts add priority call-out, discounted parts, and quarterly audits — the operating discipline that keeps a 60-vehicle PSV fleet, a corporate fleet, a car hire fleet, or a site full of heavy machinery at 100% monitoring coverage instead of the industry-typical 80%.

  • Scheduled fleet-wide device audits with per-vehicle health reports
  • Maintenance contracts: priority response, quarterly checks, parts discounts
  • Takeover audits for fleets inherited from other providers
How a Repair Works

From “It Stopped Working” to Verified Reporting in Five Steps

  1. Describe the fault

Call, WhatsApp, or book online with the vehicle, the device brand if known, and what you last saw it do. A technician does a remote pre-check where possible — some platform and SIM faults are resolved on that first call, free.

  2. Choose workshop or call-out

Bring the vehicle to the Kasarani Mwiki Road workshop for same-day service on common faults, or book a mobile technician to your home, office, or yard anywhere in our coverage area.

  3. Structured diagnosis

Power, wiring, antennas, SIM, firmware, platform — tested in sequence, with the fault isolated and explained to you in plain language, plus a fixed quote for the fix.

  4. Repair, replace, or upgrade — your call

We repair where economical, replace from shop stock where not, and recommend a 4G upgrade only when the device’s network life genuinely justifies it. No work proceeds without approval.

  5. Live verification & report

The device must report position, alerts, and sensor data live on the platform — watched together with you — before the job closes. You leave with a service record that also protects any insurance tracking requirement.

Who This Service Is For

Anyone With a Tracker That Owes Them the Truth

Private Car Owners

One car, one tracker, one job: be alive on the worst day. Diagnosis, battery renewal, and post-garage rewiring keep your car tracking — and your insurance discount — real.

Fleet & Logistics Operators

Health audits and maintenance contracts that keep logistics fleets at full coverage — because a blind vehicle in a monitored fleet is where the losses relocate to.

Matatu SACCOs & PSVs

High-vibration, high-hours vehicles chew through hardware fastest. Batch servicing timed around shifts keeps SACCO fleets compliant and monitored without losing road days.

Schools & Institutions

A school bus tracker is a parent-facing promise. Term-break servicing windows keep school transport operators at 100% before each term starts.

Car Hire & Plant Owners

Assets handed to strangers need hardware that cannot be down. Priority repair and covert re-concealment for rental and machinery fleets.

Owners Abandoned by Other Providers

Working hardware, dead platform. We audit what you have, migrate what’s salvageable to Kendaall, and replace only the genuinely dead — usually far cheaper than starting over.

Repair Questions

What Owners Ask Before Booking a Tracker Repair

Can you repair a tracker that was installed by a different company?

Yes — this is a large share of our repair work. Our technicians diagnose and repair third-party hardware of all major brands, and where the original provider’s platform is dead or unsupported, we migrate the device (or a replacement) onto Kendaall’s monitoring platform so you get a working app, alerts, and recovery support again. You are never required to have bought the device from us to have it fixed by us.

How much does a tracker repair cost?

Diagnosis is charged at a flat call-out or workshop fee, quoted upfront, and is deducted from the repair cost if you proceed. Most wiring and power repairs cost a small fraction of a new installation; battery replacements and SIM/platform fixes less still. Where replacement is the economical route, device prices are on the pricing page and repairs-versus-replace is always your decision on a written quote.

My tracker works while driving but disappears when the car is parked. What’s wrong?

That pattern points at the internal backup battery or a constant-power line fault: the device lives off ignition power while driving, then has nothing to fall back on when the engine stops. It matters more than it seems — the backup battery is exactly what keeps the tracker transmitting when a thief cuts the main power. It is one of our fastest, cheapest repairs, and one of the most important.

Do I need to upgrade my old 2G tracker even though it still works?

If it still reports reliably, not today — but plan for it. Kenyan networks are progressively refarming 2G/3G spectrum, and legacy devices will experience shrinking coverage until they fail entirely, usually starting in exactly the peri-urban and highway areas where you need tracking most. We assess your specific device’s network exposure during any service visit and will tell you honestly whether it has another year in it. When you do upgrade, existing wiring is reused where sound to keep the cost down.

Can you service my whole fleet without taking vehicles off the road?

Yes — fleet audits and repairs are scheduled around your operations: overnight at your yard, in rotating batches, or during natural downtime windows (weekends for corporates, term breaks for schools, off-peak hours for PSVs). Maintenance contract clients get a standing schedule plus priority call-out for the faults that can’t wait, with everything logged per vehicle in your fleet management account.

Will a repair or reinstallation keep my device warranty and insurance status valid?

Devices bought from Kendaall keep their hardware warranty when serviced by our technicians — self-repairs and third-party tampering are what void it. Every repair closes with a dated service record and a live-reporting verification, which is the documentation insurers ask for when a tracking device is a policy condition. If your insurer has specific certification requirements, tell us at booking and the paperwork is prepared to match.
